In review: when we moved in there was a pen at the back of the house that had been made to keep the former tenants dogs corralled. They were diggers so the owners buried telephone poles and large rocks all around the outside of the pen to deter their digging paws. We are hoping this will also deter small pigs from burrowing their way out.
In the books we have read, we've (well, Ken) has come up with his plan for the piglet hutch.
Using landscape timbers for a base and placing three in one direction and three more on top in the opposite direction. This will form a base with plenty of ventilation.
Then 2-by-4s are placed and spaced one-inch apart on top of them. Leaving some room for "debris" to fall in between the cracks to be cleaned out later.
Since we are planning on using this area for piglets, this hutch will be a little smaller than it would be if full-size pigs were going to be in it. (The pigs will be moved to a larger pen once they get too big for this one).
Once everything was secured to this point, he started on the sides - making the front braces longer than the back to form a sloping roof.
Add some plywood for a roof. Weatherproofing to come later - some kind of roofing material. Some shingles or Elastomeric - anything that keeps falling water off the pig.
Then to keep the piglets sheltered from wind and sun, some sides are attached using some plywood we had left over from another project.
More pictures later, when it's finished!
