Tigerhorse Run - An adventure in a homesteading wonderland.

The time is drawing closer! We will soon have some pigs to add to our little homestead-let. We had talked before about getting A pig, but now we are talking about getting SOME pigs. Well, 2 to be precise. Here's how that happened:

We went to a friend's house, who has a homestead about 10 miles away. I haven't been to her house for a long time and we were just crazy about all the progress they have made with the place. Last time I was there she and her husband (ok, mostly her husband) were in the process of building the barn.

The barn which is the most amazing barn I have personally ever seen. It has more personality than most houses I've seen. Handcrafted details and a wonderful sense of whimsy throughout the entire thing.

One of the things I enjoy most about visiting them is looking at all the creative touches throughout their place - both inside and out.

On each stall door there is a hand-made wooden plaque that has been brightly painted and personalized with each horse's name.

The barn's star is a handmade mosaic that is surrounded by a giant chalkboard - someplace to write notes or ideas that pop in mind.

Even the horse bathing station is creatively done with a pickup truck tool box mounted on some posts near the tie down post for keeping the horses still. All of their supplies are kept handy and out of the weather.

The original chicken coop is just as quality-built as everything else on the property. Jeff is very talented as both an architect and a builder.
And the new coop is a chicken condo! Although their chickens won't roost in it yet during the night. They have gotten used to roosting in the trees after they were attacked in the original chicken coop. But the plan is to start the next batch of chicks out in the new house so they will be used to it when they get old enough to go out on their own and should return there at night.

There are so many more exciting things on this ranch but for now... I digress - I was going to talk about our upcoming piggies and why there are two instead of one. Well, while we were there we talked about our plans and Robyn gave us a book on raising pigs and one on raising chickens to help us with our research. My Ken has been reading the pig book since we left and has retained a wealth of pigging information - one piece of which is the reason that we are now getting TWO pigs: one of the biggest problems with pigs is stress - so we've decided that a piglet would most likely be less stressed about leaving a familiar environment if he brought along a buddy to share his experience with. So - it's time to build a bigger piglet hutch!
